why in the world did I write the graphic novel, Where in the World Are My Boobs? Here’s the story.

It starts out a bit scary, but it gets better, so don’t worry.

I had breast cancer. Twice. The first time, they did chemo, radiation, and a lumpectomy, but then it came back. Lucky for me, it was curable but this time they weren’t taking any chances: I had to have a double mastectomy. Afterwards, I started to heal and find a way to go on with my life.

At the end of my three-month follow-up, I went home and looked at the patient portal to see the notes. Everything seemed unremarkable until I got to this sentence: “The patients breasts are absent.” This stopped me in my tracks. Absent? Where were they? Ridiculous scenarios of their wild adventures flooded into my brain and a story began to unfold. It was silly. It was absurd. It made me laugh.

The laughing part was key. The most terrible moments of breast cancer were when I felt so sick from chemo, or fried from radiation, or just so scared that I completely lost my sense of humor. Without that, I truly felt I ceased to exist. Finding the humor in the awful moments is the only way I got through.

That’s why I wrote Where in the World Are My Boobs? To take this heavy, dark and scary thing that had happened to me and turn it into something funny. Once I finished it, I thought maybe it’ll make other people laugh too.
